Wilhelm Furtwängler began recording a Ring Cycle for EMI in 1954, beginning with this, Die Walküre, the second of the four operas. Within two months he was dead, and his Ring - which would have been the first full studio recording, was left unfinished.
This new XR remastering from Pristine dusts off the rather dull 1954 studio sound and brings incredible new life to the recording. This 15-minute excerpt from Act 3 has been chosen to demonstrate the full range of the sound, from the most strident, sparkling brass to the gentlest, and darkest moments in this roller-coaster Valkyrie ride of an opera.
