Observing the evolving food traditions of the mountains, Sashi Bahuguna Raturi from Uttarakhand made the decision to safeguard the culinary heritage and culture of the hill state. In 2018, she launched Namakwali, a brand aimed at sharing the state's traditional recipes of pisyu loon salt—an age-old salt variety enriched with Himalayan herbs—with the rest of the world, all while upholding her family's legacy.
Pisyu loon, a flavored salt infused with aromatic Himalayan herbs, is meticulously crafted by combining rock salt, fresh herbs, and spices on a traditional grinding slab called sil-batta. This unique salt comes in an array of flavors such as ginger, garlic, hemp, and more. Beyond its delightful taste, the vibrant salt also serves as a survival food option during times of limited vegetable supplies.
Sashi employs a team of 10-11 women who have found a lucrative livelihood by handcrafting salt. Every ingredient used in Namakwali's production is carefully handpicked from the foothills, ensuring the finest quality for their products.
