Railroad crossing compilation video of signalized crossings along the whole stretch of the Union Pacific Railroad Placerville Industrial Lead Branch Line from where it comes off the UP Fresno Sub main line at the beginning through the cities of Sacramento and Rancho Cordova, California in Sacramento County and practically part of the Sacramento Regional Transit Gold Line also as the UP Placerville Branch shares its whole right of way with the SACRT Gold Line and in fact UP only owns and maintains one crossing on this line which is the first one at Ramona Ave since they own the right of way there before it starts paralleling the SACRT Gold Line as every crossing afterwards is owned by SACRT for the rest of the line. Ramona Ave is also the newest crossing being just three years old at the time this compilation video is made.
This line was part for the original Sacramento Valley Railroad between 1852 - 1888 where Southern Pacific took over in 1888 when the line was extended from Shingle Springs, CA to Placerville, CA with SP's takeover and became the Southern Pacific Placerville Branch. In the late 1980s to early 1990s the SP Placerville Branch went out of service between Rancho Cordova, CA at Nimbus & Aerojet to Placerville, CA but was still in tacked as one whole line until development caused Folsom Blvd the original highway to expand into the right of way and later the light rail extension into Folsom in 2005 and the line was split into two between Rancho Cordova, CA at Aerojet and Folsom, CA at the Folsom Wye now called Iron Triangle with this section in this compilation video still being operated by SP and then by UP when UP took over in the mid to late 1990s while the section left between Folsom and Placerville abandoned but didn't stay abandoned. The Placerville Branch was also part of the segment that use to exist that ran from the SP Walnut Grove Branch in Downtown Sacramento and connected with this line at Brighton up until the 1980s which now where Ramona Ave is at.
In 1987 the original segment of the SACRT Light Rail was build along this line to Butterfield Station where every crossing along the SP and SACRT right of way was jointly owned by the two from the Power Inn Rd crossing down to the Mayhew Rd crossing. Power Inn Rd crossing on this line was later removed in 2000 with it built under all tracks. In 1996 when UP took over, SACRT got full ownership of the crossings between Power Inn Rd and Mayhew Rd and weren't jointly owned anymore but Power Inn Rd crossing remained jointly owned until it was removed. In 1998 the light rail was extended along this line to Mather Field Rd. In 2004 the light rail was extended to Sunrise. The light rail was extended once again in 2005 to Folsom this running the whole segment of the UP Placerville Branch with all crossings being owned by SACRT. Before the light rail being built to Butterfield, Mather Field, Sunrise, then Folsom the Placerville Branch had lots of classic signals from WABCO AL-70s to Griswold and RACO EM Pedestal Mechanisms that were updated for the light rail to the current signals in the video. Their are still some SP signals left along this line which are the old MI Signals and signals that have old WCH or WABCO parts.
In the early 2000s the abandoned segment from Folsom to Placerville had most its signals removed and later years a segment of the out of service line from Diamond Springs, CA to Placerville, CA was removed for a bike trail. As of 2008 till now the second segment isn't abandoned anymore as it is operated by the P&SVRR from Irom Triangle to Latrobe, CA running excursions which the railroad plans to reinstall signals along that line and then up in El Dorado County another railroad runs excursions on that segment.
The UPRR Placerville Branch is planned to be removed from the Nimbus Rd & Hazel Station crossings for the SACRT Double Track Project starting in Summer 2022 - Fall 2023 cutting it slightly shorter out of Nimbus.
