Hotpot (huǒguō 火锅) is one of China’s most famous and beloved dining traditions. A bubbling pot of soup sits at the table and you cook meats, seafood, vegetables, tofu and noodles right inside. It is more than a meal. It is an experience filled with flavour, dipping sauces and steam rising from the pot.
Most people enjoy hotpot with family and friends, but I decided to try it alone in Shanghai. Just me, my chopsticks and a steaming broth. Was it awkward or was it the ultimate foodie adventure?
