If we ever truly deserve praise or blame for our actions, rewards or punishments, it must be because we have a capacity or power that non-responsible agents lack. This capacity or power has traditionally been called 'free will'. In this talk I look at a recent account of free will and moral responsibility developed and defended by the Princeton philosopher, Harry Frankfurt. Frankfurt thinks that standard accounts of free will and moral responsibility are confused, and that what really matters when it comes to freedom and responsibility is something philosophers have generally overlooked: a person's attitudes towards her own will. Critics argue that higher order attitudes of the sort Frankfurt emphasizes are neither necessary nor sufficient for freedom and responsibility. I will share my assessment of who gets the better of this exchange.
