Chhath Puja is a four-day Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, celebrated primarily in North and East India.
The festival involves strict rituals, including fasting, and involves offerings to both the setting and rising sun.
Key rituals include a holy dip on the first day, a long fast on the second, and evening and morning prayers (arghya) to the sun on the third and fourth days.
Four-day celebration
Day 1: Nahay Khay:
Devotees take a holy dip in a river or other water body, clean their homes thoroughly, and eat a special meal to mark the start of the fast.
Day 2: Lohanda and Kharna:
Devotees observe a day-long fast, which is broken in the evening after offering prayers to Mother Earth.
The fast continues for 36 hours without even drinking water.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya:
Devotees congregate on riverbanks in the evening to offer prayers and food baskets (soops) to the setting sun.
Day 4: Usha Arghya:
The festival concludes with morning prayers and offerings to the rising sun before the fast is broken.
