I Drove All Day Off the Beaten Path and Found This!【4K】

The story of Bulwark in central Alberta Canada began when the first settlers arrived in the area in the early 1900s.

Starting as a small community of homesteads it quickly grew when the Canadian Northern Railway laid tracks north from the town of Coronation around 1913.

One of the first businesses was George Drinnan's hardware store and soon more would follow and in 1914 the post office was established.

The village never grew to a large population but it became a busy hub for the grain industry and home to 5 grain elevators.

The railway that was to run from Bulwark to Edmonton was never completed which most likely marked the beginning of its decline.

Life was tough in the prairies with harsh winters, crop failures and a fire in 1923 that destroyed one of Bulwarks elevators.

Competition between the competing railroads along with economic decline in the 1930s and the great depression took its toll on the town.

Farmers struggled with poor harvests due to drought and other factors and also World War 2 brought other challenges as the town contributed to the war effort with the town losing several men to the war.

Changes in technology and transportation would cause a shift in these small communities as more people looked elsewhere for better opportunities.

The towns population would shrink and businesses would close with the school closing in 1960.

Rail service would slow with the line being pulled out entirely in 1962 marking the towns end.

One of the last remaining businesses was the Ogilvie General Merchant.

Over the next years all remaining residents would move away with the last leaving sometime around 1990.

Many communities met the same fate as Bulwark as they rose and fell with the railways.
