As I write this, I am overwhelmed with emotion and tears. This outfit means so much to me because it represents my grandparents’ journey of survival. My grandmother and father often told me about their difficult lives, harvesting opium just to earn enough for money, salt, and fabric material. Sometimes, their harvest wasn’t even enough to trade for anything. As for my grandfather, the opium flower became his way to avoid being enlisted in the army — and eventually, he became an opium user himself. This flower brings back memories of the lives our parents and grandparents once lived.
I wear this outfit with pride, in honor of the opium flower, my grandparents, my father, and our ancestors. May my grandmother look down from heaven with pride.
