In this powerful conversation regarding organ 7 body donation, Dr Vaishaly Bharambe shares her heartfelt experiences about Organ Donation and Body Donation - the myths, realities, and how YOU can make a difference.
The discussion is moderated by Ms. Shubhangi Mule, representing the Dnyaneshwar Mulay Foundation, an organization that is soon launching a dedicated magazine on organ and body donation in October. Unlike general awareness campaigns, this magazine has been authored by doctors and transplant coordinators actively working in the field, making it a trustworthy and practical resource for both the public and healthcare providers.
From the Perspective of an Anatomist and Researcher
Dr. Vaishaly Bharambe, MBBS, MD (Anatomy), PhD, Founder of VB Anatomy Academy, takes the conversation deeper into the realities of organ and body donation. She reflects on her research journey, which began with observing the sensitivity of students encountering a cadaver for the first time. Her PhD on organ and body donation revealed a critical insight: while most people in India have heard about organ donation, very few understand the procedures, the legal safeguards, or the fact that most organ donations happen after brain death—not natural death.
Dr. Bharambe explains:
• What brain death truly means, and why families struggle to accept it when the heart is still beating.
• How one brain-dead donor can save up to 8 lives and impact more than 50 others.
• The immense role of body donation in medical education, where one donated body can train hundreds of doctors, who in turn go on to help thousands of patients.
• Common misconceptions, such as kidney donation being unsafe, clarifying that the human body functions perfectly well with one kidney.
• The gender disparity in organ donation, with women stepping forward more often than men, and the need for shared responsibility.
She also stresses the importance of trust in the system, awareness in both rural and urban India, and the protective role of the THOTA Act, 1994, which provides strict legal safeguards for organ and tissue transplantation.
