Hummingbirds are known by that name because of the humming sound created by their beating wings, which flap at high frequencies audible to other birds and humans. They hover at rapid wing-flapping rates, which vary from around 12 beats per second in the largest species to 99 per second in small hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds are remarkable creatures with unique adaptations. Here are five fascinating facts about them:
1. Tiny but mighty:
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world, with the bee hummingbird being the smallest at just one inch in length and weighing around two grams.
2. High-speed flight:
Hummingbirds are known for their incredible agility and speed, capable of flying backward and even upside down.
3. Fast heart rate:
Their heart beats incredibly rapidly, reaching up to 1,260 beats per minute.
4. Unique tongues:
Hummingbirds have a unique, forked tongue with fringed edges that they use to efficiently lap up nectar.
5. Long-distance migrants:
Some species, like the Rufous Hummingbird, migrate thousands of miles, even traveling from Mexico to Alaska.
