Dr. Julian Escobar of Conceive Fertility Center discusses the success rates of egg freezing and highlights the factors that influence the effectiveness of the procedure. Learn why age, egg quality, and quantity are crucial in determining your future fertility options.
What are the success rates with egg freezing? Actually, they are very good, very similar to fresh eggs. The difference is that your egg number and egg quality will decline over time. If you are able to freeze them, you will be in a better position than where you will be in the future, in theory. The main thing to consider is at what age you are freezing your eggs because that is what makes the biggest difference.
If you are an egg donor or someone in the age group of 25 to 30 years old, then probably about six eggs are needed to make a baby. That’s why many companies that sell eggs from young donors sell batches of six. About six eggs typically yield two to three blastocysts, and the percentage of those that are normal is about 70%. About two-thirds of those will implant, so it comes up to about six eggs.
However, as you get older, your egg quality decreases, so you need more eggs. As you get closer to 35, you may need eight eggs; as you get close to 38, maybe ten eggs; and as you approach 40, perhaps twelve eggs. It also depends on how many babies you want to have and if gender selection is important to you. The more specific you get, the more eggs you need to freeze to have that opportunity in the future.
