What I learned from traveling the world

“The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”

It is something that seems so simple, yet its importance cannot be overstated. We all want to feel valued and recognized for the things we do, and I believe that this desire lies at the very core of what it means to be human.

However, my experiences last year helped me come to realize that the power of community plays an absolutely essential role in fulfilling this need. Whether it’s your family, your friends, or a kind stranger passing by that decides to say hi, each holds the ability to provide us with a sense of belonging and validation that we can't always get on our own.

It is why we often discover that some of our most memorable life experiences involve being able to share that moment with someone else.

More than that though, the camaraderie that we find in community can be extremely powerful. Because life really is a rollercoaster, but having a group of people to guide you through all those highs and lows will help you reach the end of the ride, smiling and wishing you could do it all over again.

That is why the time and effort you invest into building and maintaining a strong community around yourself is truly invaluable. The reality is that no one makes it to the top alone. It is a constant effort from people who enter your life and decide to say “I am going to take a chance on you.” So eventually when you find yourself in a comfortable enough position in life, please take a chance on someone else who needs a friend, an opportunity, or a kind moment of acknowledgment.

Progress is a collective effort from those before you and those with you now. So let’s grow together. Let’s support each other. Let’s take chances on those who need one. But most of all, let’s remind the world of why it’s such a beautiful thing to be appreciated.
