WHY LAND IS IN OUR HANDS IN PNG
In this video, we look at something unique about Papua New Guinea: Why most of our land is STILL in our own hands — unlike many other countries where colonizers forcefully took over the of land.
We explore:
• How Europeans viewed land during the period of exploration, colonization, and scramble for resources to fuel the industries.
• Why indigenous lands around the world were declared “uninhabited” or “unused” because of the “terra nulius” concept.
• How colonial governments claimed land in the Americas, Australia, Africa, Asia & the Pacific and pushed the indigenous people off the lands or into reserves.
• Why PNG has remained different because Sir .William MacGregor, Lieutenant-Governor of British Papua (1895-1898), prohibited the forced acquisition of indigenous land against official British Empire policy, with the result that 97% of land is in the hands of the people.
• Why PNG citizens are born wealthy - because we inherit land, resources, and potential from birth. In other countries, people who are born poor become rich; in PNG, people who are born rich become poor because of the “Money Is In A Job” belief.
This video challenges this mindset and reminds us that REAL MONEY IS IN THE LAND.
