West Point Organist Craig Williams plays Paul Manz's very popular virtuoso chorale setting of "Built on a Rock." His setting begins like a fugue, with one voice in the left hand playing an extended subject quoting the hymn tune in diminution, which is then answered by the right hand voice setting up the arrival of the hymn tune in the pedal (cantus firmus). With the arrival of the pedal melody, the two voices take off with sixteenth note runs in the right hand supported by eighth notes in the left. The opening 3/4 time signature changes to 6/8 in the second part, with a triple meter being supported by occasional 9/8 measures. With the entrance of the pedal melody, the sixteenth note flourishes take over again in the right hand. These continue over the last pedal point note, where the right hand takes eighth notes quoting the tune opening over sixteenth notes in the left hand, bringing the piece to a brilliant close.
