Gandacherra, A sense of panic gripped Gandacherra following violence unleashed by a section of people due to the death of a youth on Friday.

Several houses and shops were vandalized and set on fire. Some people were also attacked. A series of incidents took place in parts of Gandacherra after the body of the deceased- Parameswar Reang reached his native village.

The youth had an argument with the local people during Ananda Mela at 30 card area on July 7 last. The youth was reportedly chased by a group of people. In the chase, the youth had sustained injuries. There were allegations from another group of people that the youth was given electric shock. According to local sources, some shops were vandalized following the incident.

The injured youth was hospitalized on that day. But, he succumbed to injuries in the hospital on Friday morning. The unrest prevailed as soon as the news of the youth’s demise reached Gandacherra. The situation turned volatile when the body reached there.

A good number of houses and shops at 33 KB area, 30 card area and Tislighat came under severe attacks. Some incidents of arson and attacks on policemen were also reported from these places.

The police were aware of the situation but there was a lack of security arrangements before the body reached Gandacherra.

The situation was tense till the last information came in and many of the families had taken shelter in the nearby jungle in the face of such attacks. There is a possibility of further escalation of confrontation. Police’s version was not available till the last information came in.
