This video discusses Doppler effect in Binary star systems briefly. Following our two earlier videos on Doppler effect in light or the Relativistic Doppler effect (Parts 1 & 2), in this video we focus just on how Doppler effect helps us to understand the configurations of stars in such binary star systems depending up on whether the spectra of such stars are blue-shifted or red-shifted. Blue-shifting refers to the shifting of spectral lines towards the higher frequency end of the spectrum whereas red-shifting refers to a shift towards the lower frequency end of the spectrum. Special relativistic concept of Doppler shift provides a clear explanation of such shifts due to the relative motion of the stars in binary systems with respect to observers on earth.
