Time Gal is a 1985 laserdisc arcade game developed and published by Taito. It combines full-motion video (FMV) animation with interactive gameplay elements, using a cinematic, action-adventure format similar to *Dragon's Lair*. The game features a futuristic, anime-inspired visual style, with animation created by renowned Japanese studio Toei Animation.
The story follows Reika, also known as "Time Gal," a skilled time traveler from the year 4001. She embarks on a mission to prevent the evil scientist Luda from using a stolen time machine to alter historical events for his own gain. Armed with her own time-travel device, Reika must navigate various perilous time periods, including prehistoric times, ancient civilizations, and futuristic settings, to stop Luda and restore the timeline.
Gameplay in Time Gal revolves around quick-time events where players must react to on-screen prompts by moving the joystick or pressing buttons at the right moment to avoid dangers and continue the story. The branching paths and humorous animations for failed actions add to its charm. The game stands out for its high-quality animation, dynamic storytelling, and the playful personality of its heroine, who often breaks the fourth wall with expressive reactions.
Time Gal was later ported to home systems, including the Sega CD, where it gained a cult following for its unique mix of anime-style visuals and reflex-based gameplay. It remains a beloved example of the interactive movie genre from the golden age of arcade gaming.
