In this video, we demonstrate how to determine the portion of the slab to include as part of the beam flange, based on ACI 318-19 Section 8.4.1.8.
This mini-tool from RHC Engineering Tools v1.1.8 shows clear examples and step-by-step calculations based on your input dimensions.
What's Covered:
How to compute effective flange width (bf)
Use of beam and slab values: bw, hb, hf
Formulas used in the tool:
• bf = bw + 2 * hb
• bf = bw + 8 * hf
• bf = minimum of (bw + 2 * hb) and (bw + 8 * hf)
Example Input:
bw = 500 mm
hb = 700 mm
hf = 100 mm
Then:
bf = min(500 + 2×700, 500 + 8×100)
bf = min(1900, 1300)
bf = 1300 mm
