Reliant Scimitar GT SE4a

Possibly the finest example of a Scimitar Coupe you will find.

A former club concours champion, the Scimitar is in truly excellent order and looks absolutely stunning in scarlet with silver Minilite wheels and black interior with red piping.

The car was the subject of a body off restoration during 2006-07 by specialists DWR where the body was taken back to gel coat and all old repair work redone. All the fibreglassed-in mild steel metalwork was replaced with stainless steel fabricated items. Special attention was given to ensure all the shuts lines are correct.

Since then further improvements have been made including the fitment of an aluminium radiator, silicone hoses, AVO adjustable shock absorbers and springs, rebuilt gearbox and overdrive.

Other notable features include an electric fan, Weber 38DGAS3c carburettor, stainless steel fuel tank and water pipes, cupronickel brake and clutch lines, dual circuit brakes, upgraded wiring, inertia reel seatbelts, cylinder heads modified for unleaded fuel and a full stainless steel exhaust system including the manifolds.

The car presents superbly with excellent paint and chromework. The interior has been completely restored with recovered seats, new headlining and carpets. All the instruments are correct and working. A restored period Motorola radio with ipod connector is fitted.

The ‘Essex’ V6 starts instantly and settles to a smooth idle and shows good oil pressure. On the road the Scimitar does not disappoint with all controls working well and instant engagement of the overdrive. Overall a most satisfying drive.

Launched at the 1964 Earls Court Motor Show as a competitor to the Austin Healey 3000, the Scimitar SE4 was initially powered by the Ford Zephyr straight six and 296 cars were built before the motor was phased out in favour of the ‘Essex’ V6 which was fitted to the new Mk IV Ford Zephyr. Reliant re-engineered the chassis to house the V6, mounting it further back for better weight distribution and a further 591 examples were built of the SE4a and SE4b. A further 118 SE4c’s fitted with a 2.5 litre economy version of the V6 were subsequently built. Overall there were fewer than a thousand Scimitar GTs built so this is quite a rare car.

This example was first registered on 12th April 1967 and was once owned by famous rally driver Will Sparrow. After its superb restoration the car was featured in the December 2009 issue of ‘Classic Cars’ magazine. According to the V5C it has had only six former keepers.

Accompanying the car is a well-stocked history file containing all the bills from the restoration, a log of the work carried out, an owner’s handbook, old MoT certificates, wiring diagram and a record of previous owners.
