South Africa and the United States look like they are on a collision course.
On his first day in office, President Donald Trump froze nearly R10 billion in HIV prevention aid to South Africa. On 3 February, Trump published on Truth Social, "Terrible things are happening in South Africa ... they're confiscating land and actually they're doing things that are perhaps far worse than that." He promised to '(cut) off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed.'
Elon Musk, Trump’s DOGE Tzar, tweeted, "Why do you have openly racist ownership laws?"
There is one man who understands best the Trump view on South Africa, and has an insider track to the Trump administration. Joel Pollak is the South African-born American senior editor-at-large of Donald J Trump’s favourite newspaper, Breitbart News.
