The Hunters Lodge – A 4×4 Mountain Bike Adventure
It was that time again: Fall. For us, Fall means every year that we travel to MTBVerbier to end the season well. This year we wanted to give our trip something extra! What if we could sleep on the mountain for a night? Let's organize a kind of mini 4×4 mountain bike adventure...
In preparation for our mountain bike holiday in Verbier we had already packed our things for a night in the mountains, high in the mountains. Thick sleeping bag and extra thermal clothing, because it's going to be cold!
The hunter's hut
Jess from MTBVerbier was able to arrange a (unfortunately not bookable) hunter's hut through acquaintances. This hut is located a bit away from the bike park of Verbier and offers a truly amazing view over the valley. To get there we had to take the 4x4's and make the climb to the top. This is mostly doable with any car but especially the last part was a bit more demanding than the average golf. The paved roads make way for unpaved roads during the climb. The last part was then really off-road.
We didn't know exactly where we were going, we had been given a location on gps, Jess came after us later with Jurriaan from Plushrides. Just the idea gave such an epic feeling! The higher we got the more beautiful it became. It turned out that we already knew this region because a very thick trail starts here: Comfortzone! That Comfortzone is for tomorrow though. Now it's time for the sunset!
The height in combination with the sunset and the clear sky gave truly unique beautiful views over the already yellow colored trees. The palette of autumn colors with these conditions is indescribable! Fortunately Gijs Ferkranus was with us, a professional photographer by profession. That will be a great shoot of course.
The night is here, now it's time for the campfire!
When the last rays of light disappeared behind the mountains, the photoshoot was of course over. Now it was time to chill. We settled down in front of the campfire outside, which had been stoked up in the meantime. The beers and wine were grabbed. To fill our stomachs, we had brought everything for a good cheese fondue. The surroundings remained incredibly beautiful, the sun may have set but so high in the mountains, so far from “polluting light”, the sky is insanely beautiful.
In the meantime, in the hunter's cabin, the stove was lit so that we could go to bed nice and warm. To be honest, that didn't go very well! Everything was blue inside because I (Rik) had put the chimney pipe on "Zu", oops... Anyway, windows open, chimney on "Auf" and on we go.
Until the wee hours…
The evening lasted until the wee hours for most of us. These are moments that are hard to distance yourself from. The surroundings, the company, it was truly a unique moment that didn't have to stop for any of us. Deep in the night we went to bed. Jess had pitched a tent outside, which was now frozen solid. Fortunately there was still enough room inside to sleep.
The next morning: Comfort zone!
After waking up feeling a bit hungover (no idea why…), it was of course time for coffee. Gijs was already waving his camera around to capture the sunrise. Our focus was on waking up and getting ready for the descent, because the Comfertzone is really a top one, especially from so high.
It was one to remember
Indeed, it was only 1 night our 4×4 mountainbike adventure. However, the feeling, the combination of really having to go off the beaten track and staying in such a beautiful place gives such a super cool feeling! The views, the campfire and the togetherness is just epic!
It was an experience where we were unanimous… that we should do this more often, much more often!
