Sumila Ronghangpi was a 12-year-old girl from the Karbi Anglong district in Assam, India. In April 2021, she was employed as a domestic helper in the household of Prakash Borthakur in Raha, Nagaon district. On April 22, 2021, her charred body was discovered in her employer's residence. The employers claimed it was a case of suicide; however, initial investigations suggested that she was murdered and then burned to conceal the crime.

The incident sparked widespread outrage across Assam, leading to protests and demands for justice from various social organizations and communities. The Governor of Assam constituted a one-man enquiry committee led by Moloy Bora, IAS, Commissioner of the Central Assam Division, to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sumila's death.

In memory of Sumila and to address issues related to child labor and education, the Sumila Ronghangpi Memorial Residential School (SRMRS) was established. The school aims to transform lives through education and prevent such tragedies in the future.

This tragic event highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by children from marginalized communities and underscored the urgent need for stricter enforcement of child protection laws in India.
