Hugo C. Cardoso specializes in language contact, with a specific focus on the role of Portuguese in the genesis of creole languages. He holds an MA degree in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and a PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands). His work has been mainly concerned with Portuguese-based creoles spoken in India, Sri Lanka, and Suriname. He has published numerous articles on topics related to creole studies and contributed chapters to edited volumes devoted to different aspects of creolization. As 2013 he is a researcher at the Centre for Linguistic Typology (University of Lisbon), having also taught at various other universities.
