Pokemon's Edgy "Fake" Legendaries

Today's Pokemon deep dive has us taking an in depth look at a Pokemon so prolific and novel in its time that it created an entire archetype around it. Lucario came into the Pokemon world as something "in between" regular and special, and received a very specific type of hype and characterizing in its original gen 4 Pokemon debut. It starred in a movie, prerelease content and games, and was in many ways a secondary star of the show! A Pokemon with legendary qualities- but not quite all the way there.

The next set of games would see another Pokemon treated extremely similar to this in Zoroark, and from there an archetype was born. These Lucario-likes are all defined by this common trait of being somewhat special- and then further known for a sort of darker, edgier design, reflective of a Pikachu for an older audience- a fascinating emblem of the way Pokemon has grown with its audience.
