Bodiam Level Crossing

Norges Statsbaner Class NSB 21c No.376 (K&ESR No.19) "Norwegian" in Kent & East Sussex Railway livery runs around its coaches before coupling up and heading to Northiam. This is the crossing at Bodiam station, the current terminus of the Kent & East Sussex Railway. As this was the last train of the day, the gates were locked after the final closure. Unlike other gated crossings, these gates have a red diamond instead of the red circle, to keep with the railway's heritage. The same is seen at Tenterden crossing. They are beginning to get rusty, but that is expected after nearly 20 years of service. One of the gates has a small piece added to the bottom, because of the gradient of the road. This quiet road is the main road into Bodiam, and the footpath that follows alongside it was built when the railway reopened in 2000. In the first clip, to allow for running round the train, the guard has to get the points key and unlock them before opening the gates. The tracks are very overgrown and the rails (as they are embedded in the tarmac) have created a very bumpy crossing surface now. The points here were extended across the road to create a larger passing loop when the station reopened, creating one of a few crossings in the UK with interlaced track.
