Lanzarote, Canary Islands – 18 September — Right now, the Canary Islands are baking. Temperatures are soaring, the air is thick with calima (that Sahara dust everyone hates), and Mr TravelON decided to hit the streets to see how people on holiday are coping… and what the heck this weather warning really means.

⚠️ What’s Happening

A strong calima event is in progress, combined with a heatwave. Dust in suspension is reducing air quality significantly.

Temperatures across islands including Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are expected to reach mid-30s Celsius (in some places up to 37°C in the interior), even coastal zones are feeling it.

Authorities have issued yellow weather warnings for calima and high heat under the national weather agency (AEMET).

Fire risk is elevated in several islands due to dry conditions.

🎤 On The Ground: What Mr TravelON Saw

Most tourists didn’t really care – they were happy enough eating, drinking, and carrying on with their holidays. The bars and restaurants were buzzing, and plenty of people just got on with it.

That said, some visitors admitted the heavy dust made it a bit harder to breathe, especially for those with asthma or breathing issues. A few covered up with masks, while others simply shrugged it off.

The sky had that strange orange haze, visibility dropped across Lanzarote, and the streets were coated in a fine layer of Sahara dust. Locals told us they’ve seen it all before – but agreed this calima feels stronger than usual.

Health & Travel Tips

If you’re out here or planning to come:

Stay hydrated – water is your best friend.

Wear light, breathable clothing; avoid sun between ~12-4pm.

If you have respiratory issues, asthma, allergies, stay indoors or use a face mask outside.

Eyes will sting. Sunglasses & eye drops help.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activity.

Check local air quality readings & follow AEMET warnings.
