Aiden Foucault Etheridge is a master’s student working with MIT CSAIL Research Scientist Dr. Amar Gupta and the Clinical Decision Making Group. He shares an inside look at how cutting-edge machine learning techniques are being applied to real-world financial challenges that impact both consumers and banks.
Foucault Etheridge discusses his work to design algorithms to detect credit card anomalies by analyzing massive datasets of transaction histories. With only 1 fraudulent transaction for every 10,000 normal ones, the team must creatively adapt techniques from language models, like ChatGPT, to identify outliers and predict unusual spending behavior and identify when a card has been stolen or compromised. These methods to analyze outliers have far reaching implications in other fields of study including medical imaging and generative AI.
