I was driving through the back roads of West Virginia last fall, past towns where the biggest building was a small, white-plank church with a slightly crooked steeple. I started thinking about the men who lead those flocks—the preachers. Not the ones on TV, but the ones who live and breathe the same coal dust as their congregation. I wondered what weight they carry, and what they'd be willing to do to keep the lights on and the doors open for people who have nothing else.
This song is a story about one such man. A man caught between the word of God and the needs of his people, who finds his own kind of salvation in the woods at night, with the steam from a copper coil rising up like a prayer into the dark. It’s a hymn for the good man forced to walk a crooked road for the right reasons.
