Stoltz Pool Campground GUIDE (Cowichen River Provincial Park)

We were quite surprised to come across this remote memorial to the "Forgotten Army" in Burma. The British 14th Army supported by Canadians and other allied troops repulsed the invading Japanese 15th Army during WW II. Both sides suffered heavy losses losses, 60,000 allied and 90,000 Japanese. Little was known at the time or remembered later of this vital facet of WW II. The supply airlift airlift, the Burma Hump is better known than the travails of the army in Burma. One hero was Major C.F. Hoey, a native of Duncan. He died in the battle of Arakan, Burma, in 1944 and was posthumously awarded the highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. He grew up in Duncan so perhaps this is why the memorial is located here. The jungle like setting beside the river is said to be reminisent of Burma.

The Memorial, erected in August 1996, was sponsored by the BC Burma Star Association. Anyone who qualified for the Burma Star or the Pacific Star with the Burma clasp is invited to join this veterans organization. The memorial is similar to a large memorial at Kohima, Burma. The epitaph on both memorials is attributed to John Maxwell Edmonds.

The nearby interpretive display at the memorial site tells the story of the "Forgotten Army" on one side and lists the members of the Burma Star Association of BC on the other.
