The CR-V Sport and Sport Touring models feature an all-new, advanced two-motor hybrid system that marks a significant leap forward in performance. With an impressive 247 lb.-ft. of torque a 15 lb.-ft. improvement over its predecessor the new CR-V offers superior performance compared to previous generations of this popular SUV.
At the heart of this new hybrid system is a meticulously refined 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine, now equipped with direct fuel injection. The redesigned hybrid setup also includes new high- and low-speed lockup ratios, which enhance the vehicle's responsiveness, offering a sportier driving experience while maintaining a relaxed driving environment at highway speeds. This configuration also contributes to improved fuel efficiency, a higher sustained top speed, and the ability to tow up to 1,000 pounds. The combined output of this system is a robust 204 hp.
The new traction motor is capable of spinning at 14,500 rpm and generates 181 horsepower. Meanwhile, the generator motor spins at 17,000 rpm, producing 161 horsepower, and is dedicated to efficiently charging the hybrid's battery pack.
This advanced hybrid system is further enhanced by Linear Shift Control, which creates the sensation of engine revs linked to vehicle speed, mimicking the feel of a conventional drivetrain shifting gears under wide-open throttle. This feature adds to the overall exhilarating driving experience of the new CR-V.
Additionally, the hybrid system introduces a new "B" transmission setting that enables stronger regenerative and engine braking, achieving up to 0.09G of deceleration. This allows the CR-V to be driven in a "one-pedal" style, a driving experience commonly associated with battery-electric vehicles.
Another significant improvement in the new hybrid-electric system is the substantial increase in continuous maximum speed, which has been raised from 86 mph to 115 mph. This enhancement makes the CR-V not only more efficient but also more capable on the open road.
For the first time, the CR-V hybrid is available with front-wheel drive, expanding the options for drivers who prefer this configuration. The CR-V Sport offers both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options, while all-wheel drive is standard on the CR-V Sport Touring, providing superior traction and handling in a variety of driving conditions.
Under the hood of the EX and EX-L grades lies the updated and refined direct-injected 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine underscores Honda's commitment to improving the efficiency and performance of internal combustion engines, even as the company advances into the electrified era.
The enhancements to the 1.5-liter turbo engine are substantial, providing a more refined driving experience with improved power delivery. This engine runs on regular unleaded gasoline and produces 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The peak power is maintained over a broader range at high revs than in previous models, while its 179 lb.-ft. of peak torque, available from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm, arrives 300 rpm earlier, offering a more responsive driving feel.
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) paired with the 1.5-liter turbo engine has also been refined. A quieter belt design and a thicker case reduce vibrations, enhancing the overall driving experience. The CVT's performance is further improved with optimizations in Torque On Demand control, early downshifts during braking, and refinements to the Honda G Design shift logic. When driving at full throttle, the CR-V’s Step Shift programming simulates gear changes, contributing to a more dynamic driving experience.
Available across all grades and standard on the Sport Touring is the updated version of Honda's Real Time All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Control System. This system, in its sixth-generation iteration, is quieter and now capable of directing up to 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. This not only improves handling performance but also enhances traction management in slippery conditions.
The Real Time AWD system integrates a conventional front-wheel-drive setup with a compact transfer case that distributes torque to the rear drive assembly via a driveshaft. The multi-plate clutch, managed by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump, connects the driveshaft to the rear differential, ensuring smooth and responsive torque distribution.
Significant advancements in the CR-V's structural stiffness further elevate its ride quality, handling, and collision safety. The redesigned front subframe, along with additional stiffening members in the rear door frame and B pillars, contribute to the overall rigidity of the vehicle. More rigid mounting points for the rear springs and suspension arm also enhance stability and handling.
