Ducklings of Election Day

No one would have thought that during the election season of 2012, I had any time to do anything other than campaign for my three favorite candidates. Barack Obama for President of the United States, Scott Israel for Sheriff of Broward County and Jeff Nelson for Mayor of the Town of Southwest Ranches where I reside; but I can ALWAYS make time for a rescue!

On October 17th, 2012 as I was heading out to campaign for the now Sheriff Elect Scott Israel, I stopped by a CVS Pharmacy to buy some cigars (I chew, I don't smoke). I noticed a hen (female) Muscovy duck standing next to a couple of broken egg shells and she looked distressed, with good reason. She had been incubating her clutch of eggs for about 20 days and then a predator (more than likely a raccoon or opossum discovered her nest and began eating the eggs.

The momma duck looked petrified and didn't know what to do, but lucky for her, I speak duck (just kidding ... don't go getting a butterfly net!). I found the nest and retrieved the remaining eggs and made a u-turn back home to get them into an incubator in the event that they were still viable.

A Muscovy duck egg takes about 31 days to hatch so if they hatched in less time than that I knew I had accomplished a rescue. On November 6th, 2012 the morning of the General Election, out they started to pip. Between getting the President of the United States re-elected and getting the Sheriff of Broward County elected (beating the incumbent Republican Sheriff Al Lamberti) AND getting the Mayor of the Town of Southwest Ranches re-elected, I raced back and forth from the polling location where I was working back to my home to check on my breakout arrivals!

This is the first time I am sharing the story, because I know my friend Harrison GrandWilliams who was the coordinator of the Scott Israel for Sheriff campaign called me on several occasions asking where I was and I couldn't bring myself to say "I'm a mother duck!"

True story. All my guys got elected and I had time to make a family while campaigning them to victory!
