This final section of the introduction defines sensing as a “living communication with the world,” and reaffirms Merleau-Ponty’s objective in the book to move against the tide of science and return to the phenomenal field, the layer of experience in which things are first given to us. He also mentions that this will not be our final goal. After the phenomenal field, we will make a “second reduction,” to the “transcendental field,” in which the phenomenal field itself will become the object of analysis.
