The Nanai people are a Tungusic people of the Far East, who have traditionally lived along Heilongjiang (Amur), Songhuajiang (Sunggari) and Ussuri rivers on the middle Amur Basin..

William Henry Jackson (April 4, 1843 – June 30, 1942) was an American painter, Civil War veteran, geological survey photographer and an explorer.
From 1894 to 1896, Jackson Jackson was a member of the World Transport Commission, on whose instructions he went on a long journey through Europe, Africa, India, and Japan. He also visited Russia..
During his time in Russia, he spent some time in Trans-Baikal and photographed the local Nanai people. These are from that period.
