Harvey Stovall, a veteran officer in the United States Army Air Forces, discovers in 1949 that a well-known Toby Jug in the display of a London antique shop originated from Archbury, the airfield where Stovall fought during World War II. He purchases the jug, believing it to be the identical one that had stood on the mantel of the officers' club at the abandoned airport, and travels there to think back on his experiences during the war.

The same-titled novel by Sy Bartlett and Beirne Lay, Jr. served as inspiration for Henry King's 1949 American war film Twelve O'Clock High. Gregory Peck plays Brig. General Frank Savage in the film. In supporting parts are Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill, Millard Mitchell, and Dean Jagger.

The film, which received four nominations overall, won two Academy Awards: Dean Jagger for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Thomas T. Moulton for Best Sound Recording. Twelve O'Clock High was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress in 1998 and was chosen for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
