Live London 2002
My favourite song by Rachmaninov. It is variously called A Dream, The Dream or Sleep in translation - Сон literally means Sleep. Teternikov's poem inspires Rachmaninov to produce some of the most achingly nostalgic music he ever wrote. Renée Fleming understands its mood like no other interpreter, delivering a spellbinding live performance especially as the song blossoms into its climax from 1:25 onwards, heard in less boxy acoustics than the exquisitely sung studio version (on the album Night Songs). Jean-Yves Thibaudet gives ravishing support at the piano.

There is nothing
more desirable
In the world than the dream.
It has magic stillness.
It has on its lips
No sadness, no laughter
And bottomless eyes,
and many hidden pleasures.
It has two immense wings,
as light as
the shadow of midnight.
It's unfathomable
how it carries them,
and where and on what;
It will not beat its wings,
And it will not move its shoulder.
