Katonah FD Motor Vehicle Accident With Ejection Off Overpass Into Water Response

Katonah Fire Department Ladder 39, Engine 115, Utility 8, Rescue 17, and Utility 22, along with Bedford Hills Fire Department Rescue 10 and Utility 6, Northern Westchester Paramedics 45-Medic-2, New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police Unit 6W33, Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps Ambulance 65B1, Ambulance 65B2, and Ambulance 65B3, Yorktown Heights Fire Department Car 2531, Utility 143, and Rescue 55, New York State Police Unit 3K17, and Bedford Police Department Car 33 responding to a motor vehicle accident with reported ejection into the water on Interstate 684 northbound in the area of the Beaver Dam Road underpass in Katonah, New York. A complete rundown of the units that responded is listed below.

Originally, the Katonah FD, the Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC, and 45-Medic-1 from the Northern Westchester Paramedics were dispatched. 45-Medic-2 also began responding due to the severe nature of the dispatch. Car 2213 was the first Katonah FD unit to sign on and immediately requested the Yorktown Heights FD Dive Team to be placed on standby in quarters. Car 2213 and 45-Medic-1 responded to the accident scene on Interstate 684, while Car 2212 and 45-Medic-2 were both directed to respond to Beaver Dam Road to attempt to locate the patient who had been ejected. Car 2212 arrived on Beaver Dam Road and was able to locate the patient, approximately 50 feet below the highway overpass. Because of this, Katonah FD and Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC units were initially directed to respond to Beaver Dam Road, while a rescue from Bedford Hills FD was requested to respond to Interstate 684 to handle the accident scene. A second BLS ambulance was also requested from Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC to respond to Interstate 684 to handle additional patients. While units on Beaver Dam Road were still assessing the situation, the Yorktown Heights FD Dive Team was requested to the scene as a precaution. It was soon determined that the patient was not in the water and that the best plan for removal would be to lift the patient onto the highway via rope system. At this point, most units operating on Beaver Dam Road were redirected to Interstate 684. The Yorktown Heights FD Dive Team was advised to continue in for manpower despite the patient not being in the water, which prompted their boat assets to remain in quarters. A third BLS ambulance was requested to the scene. Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC was initially unable to fulfill a third crew so Bedford FD EMS was dispatched. Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC was then able to establish a crew, but they were requested to standby in quarters as Bedford FD had easier access. However, command shortly after requested an additional BLS ambulance and medic to the scene for a firefighter having respiratory distress. Katonah-Bedford Hills VAC's third ambulance was then requested to respond in, and 45-Medic-3 was assigned. The ejected patient was extricated from below the highway and transported ALS to Westchester Medical Center via Ambulance 65B1 with 45-Medic-2 on board. Ambulance 65B2 transported a second patient BLS to Westchester Medical Center and Ambulance 52B2 transported a third patient BLS to Northern Westchester Hospital. 45-Medic-1 went back into service. 45-Medic-3 secured an RMA with the firefighter, placing themself and Ambulance 65B3 back in service. All mutual aid resources were released with only some Katonah FD units remaining to assist New York SP with the accident investigation.
