Kernville

Kern River is a top spot for river rafting in California. But, there's plenty of more ways to enjoy the wild and scenic river in Kernville. This rural town has a vintage western vibe, and the downtown area features interesting historic buildings, fun local shopping, and great places to eat and drink.

It’s like living in Gold Rush times, with more creature comforts. Explore, hike, river raft or relax. There are lots of places to stay, whether you’re camping or prefer to have a bed to sleep in. We stayed at a rustic motel with a private beach next to the river, great for cooling off. Campgrounds are plentiful too.

There are some tasty and even healthy restaurant options. And boy were we thankful to cool down with a cold brew at Kern River Brewing when the thermometer hit 90 degrees

There's a lot to explore, and changing terrain, as you travel the highway that parallels the river. In under an hour, you'll find cooler temperatures in a greener landscape, at higher elevations in the Sequoia National Forest.

There’s so much natural beauty here, plus dark evening skies, great for stargazing.
