Sizergh Castle, England — Peaceful Walk at the Gateway to the Lake District [4K]

Welcome to a serene walk through Sizergh Castle, England— a beautiful historic gateway to the Lake District, filmed in 4K. After a typical rainy English morning, the showers slowly ceased as we drove north, which allowed for a peaceful wander through medieval Sizergh Castle and its lovely gardens, marking the beginning of our 5-day Lake District adventure.

Week 2, Day 8 takes us inside and out of this Cumbrian treasure, as we explore both the castle’s historic rooms and the surrounding grounds. This quiet travel diary continues my Slow Days in England series with the calm, contemplative pace you might be used to by now. 🌿

For a bit of history: Sizergh Castle has been watching over this corner of Cumbria since the 1300s, when it began life as a fortified pele tower to help defend against raids. It’s now cared for by the National Trust, but amazingly, the same family has lived here for around 26 generations. The Stricklands (now Hornyold‑Strickland) have called Sizergh home since the 1200s, which means we’re walking through almost 800 years of family history as we wander through the rooms and the gardens that have wrapped themselves around this home for centuries.

Inside the castle, one of the real stars is the famous Inlaid Chamber. The dark, glossy wood paneling in the bedroom isn’t just pretty – it’s considered some of the finest Elizabethan joinery in northern England, carefully preserved and now back in its original setting after years on display in a London museum. When you see all those tiny patterns and carved details, it’s amazing to imagine the skilled craftsmen who spent months (or years!) creating it by hand.

Sizergh also has some interesting connections to royal history. The family were loyal to the Catholic King James II and followed him into exile for a time in the late 1600s, but the house itself survived all those ups and downs and was eventually given to the nation in the 1950s. Today it feels like a peaceful gateway to the Lake District – a place where you can slow down, enjoy the views, and imagine all the stories these stone walls could tell.

I’d like to note that we took Day 7 off for a well-needed rest, so you haven’t missed any content – just a quiet pause before this beautiful castle exploration. Our five days in the Lake District begins here in this corner of Cumbria, staying in Windermere – a town that grew from a rural farming community into one of England’s most beloved holiday bases after the railway arrived in 1847. Inspired by early guidebooks and writers like William Wordsworth, visitors have been travelling to the shores of Windermere for generations, seeking the same fresh air, gentle views, and slower pace that we’re enjoying on this trip.

These peaceful days exploring England’s iconic Lake District did not disappoint, and were the absolute highlight of my entire trip.
