The South African Human Rights Commission has voiced concerns
over the increasing number of complaints regarding arrests for
cannabis use or possession, particularly within the Rastafarian
community. The commission has written to SAPS National Commissioner
Fannie Masemola to address these grievances, stating that such arrests
may lead to human rights violations. The SAHRC has called on the
Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to draft
regulations for the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act, which came into
law in June but has yet to take effect. Lead applicant in the
complaint Adv. Gareth Prince shares his insights on the matter.
