One of my favourite activities in Rome (or anywhere in Italy) is to go grocery shopping to the farmer´s markets, where locals sell their products; fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, wine, meat and fish.
I favour simple, healthy vegetarian food, and I tend to make my own dishes about 90% of the time (the rest is filled mostly with crispy Roman pizza haha). So no wonder I am in love with Roman markets. Actually, I have been quite a mediocre home chef, but after coming to Italy and getting access to all the best ingredients... Cooking became more fun and creative.
But yes, my favourite part of cooking is absolutely visiting the markets. In this video I'm taking you to Mercato San Giovanni di Dio in the beautiful Monteverde district. I exchanged greetings with some of the sellers who have become like friends to me. We´ll meet Simona, Rosanna and Mohamed, and they even gave me two vegetarian Italian autumn recipes to try (you can find the recipes by Simona and Rosanna listed below).
Let me know in the comments of what is your experience of the Italian food markets and grocery stores. What do you like to buy? This time I brought an assortment of tomatoes from Sicily, lemons from Amalfi Coast, onions from Tropea, garlic from Abruzzo and a selection of vegetables for minestrone from Rome. Oh, so delizioso!
Places and recipes mentioned in the VLOG:
FARMER´S MARKETS worth visiting in Rome:
🍋 Mercato San Giovanni di Dio (in Monteverde)
🍋 Mercato Trionfale (in Prati/Cipro, near Vatican City)
🍋 Testaccio Market (in Testaccio)
(Yes, Campo dei Fiori is great too, but the prices are high comparing to local markets because it´s touristic area)
SIMONA´S PASTA with ROMANESCO BROCCOLI
Ingredients: Half romanesco broccoli, your favourite pasta, olive oil, one garlic clove (+ optional spices like salt and chili flakes).
1. Boil romanesco broccoli for 15 minutes.
2. Add one glove of garlic and olive oil to the pan and heat the garlic in oil a little so the taste of the garlic absorbs in the oil. Then remove the garlic.
3. Cook your favourite pasta al dente. Add pasta and romanesco broccoli to the pan. Mix and cook for a second. Add optional spices. Enjoy!
