Modern Dry Fly Pattern: Jack Arnot's New Age Silver Surfer

In this fly tying tutorial, Signature Tyer Jack Arnot teaches us how to tie one of his modern dry fly patterns: Arnot's New Age Silver Surfer. This is a fully synthetic dry fly that was inspired by the Spanish CDC split wing tying style he learned while fishing in Europe. Instead, though, it uses our Ultra Dry Yarn, and Ultra Dry Dubbing, to create an extremely buoyant and buggy dry fly. In this video he uses Glo Brite for a sighter, but you can substitute that for some fibers of our Parapost Yarn. This pattern is excellent in a wide range of applications but you will see it excel in fast, riffled water where other dry flies typically struggle to float. It's highly visible, takes floating really well, and floats for a long time. It also works great if you're trout fishing with dry dropper techniques as it can suspend nymphs very well. This is a great searching pattern when trout aren't keyed in on a specific hatch. Originally, though, it was tied as a grey drake imitation so it excels when grey drakes are around.

Embracing the techniques of euro nymphing and other multi-faceted styles of fishing, Jack discovered a universal approach to trout fishing that’s adaptable to any environment. His dedication saw him rise through the ranks, until he became the youth national champion in 2016. He secured gold and silver team medals at subsequent World Championships. Currently ranked 2nd in the nation, Jack is a member of the Team USA Adult Fly-Fishing Team where he won a Team Bronze medal at the Fly Fishing World Championships in France in 2024.
