This video will show you the the ins and outs of graphing polynomial functions by walking you through how to sketch a cubic function. I will share a few very simple steps that you can use when analyzing the graphs of polynomial functions to determine their key features. This example involves a cubic function written in factored form.
The process begins by looking for the degree of the polynomial function. Since we are working with a cubic function here, the degree will be 3. Next, we analyze the leading coefficient of the polynomial. Since we are working with a negative leading coefficient, we know the end behavior of the polynomial function.
The next thing we do is look at the x-intercepts of the polynomial and the y-intercept of the polynomial. We can analyze the order of the x-intercepts to find out the behavior of the polynomial function as it passes through the x-axis.
Finally, we are able to plot all of the key information from analyzing our polynomial function on a graph. Joining everything with a smooth curve will help us create the graph of our cubic function!
