Joseph Henri Baptiste Lebasque (Champigné, September 25, 1865 - Le Cannet, August 7, 1937) was a French painter of the post-impressionist school. He was born into a modest family (his father was a cooper) and enrolled at the Académie Colarossi in 1886. He later collaborated with Ferdinand Humbert on the frescoes in the Panthéon for six years, starting in 1888.
He then began to exhibit his works at the "Society of French Artists" and at the Salon of Independents, working together with Maximilien Luce and Paul Signac.
He also exhibited at the "National Society of Fine Arts", where, in 1902, he met Pissarro, an artist who immediately exerted a great influence on his pictorial conceptions of him. In his travels, he also went to London where he discovered Turner's painting. These cultural contributions consolidated his training and opened up new ways of expression for him, which he always experimented with great skill.
In 1903 the State bought his painting "Merenda sull'erba". He then collaborated with Félix Vallotton and Georges Rouault in ceramic decoration tests at André Methey in 1906 and created decorations and furnishings for theaters and for various Parisian environments.
After the war, in which he participated, in 1922 he exhibited at the E. Druet gallery. Two years later he bought the villa "Beau Site", where he lived until 1930. In 1925 he was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor and from 1927 he no longer accepted to sign contracts with art dealers.
In 1930 he left Paris for the South of France and bought a house on the Côte d'Azur in Le Cannet, rue Danys. There he met and assiduously frequented Dunoyer de Segonsec, a well-known illustrator, and the painter Pierre Bonnard, who had also settled in Le Cannet as early as 1925.
In Le Cannet Henri Lebasque died in 1937, at the age of 72.
