BROKEN! Why did the Standard 8 break down recently??!! Classic car fail & fix

A recent trip to a classic car meeting ended in failure with the 1950s Standard 8 broken down at the side of the road (see the Audlem Festival of Transport 2022 video). In this upload, the three of us go back and retrieve the stricken car from the farmyard we pushed it into - fortunately it only weighs about 710 kgs (wet) so rolling it 100yds down the road to the nearest farm wasn't a struggle, just a little disappointing as any car breakdown is.
With the Standard safely recovered back home, I spent some time investigating the reasons for dad's "failure to proceed" while at the wheel, and report back on what I found and what I had to do to (hopefully) remedy the situation.
Breakdowns aren't unknown to regular users of cranky old classic cars, especially ones that have been recently re-commissioned after a period sat idle in someone's garden or shed, and our Standard 8 is no different, but it was disappointing that a part that, visually, looks to be almost brand new, should fail so convincingly after very little mileage. The joys of reproductions car parts eh!? Let me know in the comments about your experiences of modern parts for older cars failing before their time.
