A look at the Warrington & Stockport and St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railways in Warrington. Parts of these are still in use as the freight line between the West Coast Main Line and Garston via Fiddlers Ferry.
The lines were at one time one of four direct routes between Liverpool and Manchester. The through route to Manchester closed in 1985 when the bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal became unsafe.
