Little Tokyo's beloved Mitsuru Sushi & Grill, a fixture in the community since 1976, will be closing its doors on August 28, 2025. Known for its comforting food and welcoming atmosphere, the restaurant has been a go-to spot for many community members over the years.
Owner Mamoru Hanamure, originally from Kaseda, Kagoshima Prefecture (now Minamisatsuma City), moved to the United States after working as a mechanic in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. He took over the business from his sister, who was running a small grill attached to a pharmacy. In 1999, the restaurant was renovated and doubled in size, transitioning from a small grill to a full sushi bar and restaurant.
In the 1970s, Mitsuru Sushi & Grill's signature dish was barbecue ribs, as the sushi boom had not yet begun. Although sushi was offered for takeout before the renovation, it was only after the sushi bar was established that the restaurant began serving sushi in earnest. The restaurant became a staple during Nisei Week in August and was known for preparing New Year's osechi dishes at the end of the year.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought a significant drop in sales, and the restaurant faced a very difficult period. During this time, they received support from community organizations, including the Little Tokyo Service Center, for which they are deeply grateful.
Mitsuru Sushi & Grill's last day of operation will be Thursday, August 28, 2025. However, they will be holding a sale of store fixtures on the weekend of August 29, 30, and 31. The community is invited to stop by and say their goodbyes.
Run by husband and wife duo Mamoru and Dora Hanamure, Mitsuru Sushi & Grill (or just "Mitsuru Grill" as it is known by regulars) has been a place where community groups gathered, friendships formed, and Japanese and American flavors met on the plate. Dora is known for letting regulars know which daily specials are on the menu, and some refer to the restaurant fondly as the community living/family room.
Mamoru and Dora are ready for a well-earned retirement and are looking forward to more fishing. While it’s bittersweet, the community is excited to see the space's next chapter with J-Pop Culture Café, Inc. (brought to you by the team behind Anime Jungle/Little Akihabara!) coming in 2026, carrying on the spirit of the Little Tokyo community while bringing something new to the neighborhood.
