Konnichiwa! This breathing exercise, the "Lip Roll" exercise, will give you a great foundation for a wonderful breath for shinobue flute. Breath is something you cannot see, and one might not pay too much attention to it (especially if you are studying shinobue alone without a teacher), but breath is EXTREMELY important to get a beautiful shinobue tone.
Doing breathing exercises is not glamorous and takes discipline. Make it a part of your routine in your practice and in your life. Shinobue practicing is not just 30 minutes a day: It's a lifestyle and lifelong journey!! As a shinobue player, just pretend you are learning to be a SHINOBI (like Naruto). Training, Training, Training every day and every night!!!!! :D
You can use this exercise before you start your shinobue practice. Also, do this exercise if you have notes that are not coming out or if you have a phrase you are running out of breath before the end. Stop trying to push out high notes with your mouth force, do this exercise, and try the high notes again with relaxed lips. You can do this exercise during commercial breaks, while you are waiting for the water to boil, etc.
You can also do "Ho Ho Ho" exercise, which is just as effective as the "Lip Roll" exercise.

Happy practicing!! :D
