Like the famous "Tehachapi Loop", the Bethungra Spiral was built to gain elevation while keeping the grade to a minimum. The original mainline still uses the 2.5 % grade for all downhill trains, while Northbound trains travel on the 1.5% grade of the spiral. The loop is in country New South Wales between the towns of Cootamundra and Junee. The loop cannot be seen in one view and access to the middle is now prohibited, but there are a few locations that give you a view of trains traversing the spiral.
