Welcome to my boat rebuild series on my 1983 20' Sea Ox.
Today, we installed the hydraulic steering. After installing the rod holder gunnels, I ran the hydraulic tubes through the rigging tube, cut out the hole to install the helm steering, and that's when I recruited my brother and a buddy to help run the hydraulic fluid through and get the air bubbles out. It was a process, but unfortunately the video file got corrupted so I wasn't able to include the entire process in the video so I'll lay everything out here.
The corrupted video file included the entirety of running the hydraulic fluid through the tubes and working the air bubbles out. For starters, I went with the BayStar Outboard Steering Kit (linked below) which is only rated for up to 150HP. Even though mines a 200HP, I chose BayStar instead of the SeaStar because it was half the price and through my research, the main reason for the rating is motor weight and speed. My two-stroke 200HP is 50lb lighter than a new four-stroke 150HP, so I got that beat, and the speed is probably about the same. This isn't advice, because I don't want to be liable lol, but instead just my take on why I did what I did.
Then, we installed the steering ram, greased up and installed the steering bar, attached the bar to the ram, attached steering hoses to the ram (one on each side), attached the brass hose fittings to the underside of the helm (with teflon tape or similar), hit the helm cutout with 5200 and bolted in the helm, and attached the hoses to the brass fittings in the helm.
Now it's time to add hydraulic fluid into the helm via tube attached to the hydraulic fluid container (upside down). I'd describe how to do it, but Florida Sportsman and Born Again Boating have actual videos on it, so go watch theirs for a tutorial.
