Na Cailligh live from St.Finian’s Church, Dublin debuts an original composition of Maeve McCann, a 4 part March in D minor which represents the Cailleach bringing the Winter months. Additional arrangements by Caty Cleary, Maaike Boonstra and Lennard Ford. (Please ignore the pipes blooper - I was so nervous for the debut I messed up my own solo! Oops!)
More on the folklore: This tune is composed and arranged to represent the personification of winter, the Cailleach otherwise known as, the divine hag. During the darkness of the cold season, the Cailleach marches with her staff and determines the length and harshness of the winter we endure. Hammering mountains, creating storms and forging icy cold weather, the Cailleach marches ahead on her path from Samhain, the end of the harvest, to Lá Fhéile Bríde or Imbolc. On the 1st of February, the Hag gathers firewood for whatever she choses to remain of winter. As year reaches Ostara, the spring equinox, the Cailleach is tempted to rest but in many instances will not give over her reign to the Goddess Brigid, ruler of the summer months, until Bealtaine on the 1st of May.
